THERESA, N.Y. (AP) - A 30-year-old northern New York man has drowned after diving off a cliff into a small lake.

Police say Daurice Mapp, of Black River, was with friends on Thursday afternoon when he jumped off the cliff into the water at Sixberry Lake in the Town of Theresa.

Authorities say when Mapp came to the surface, he immediately appeared to struggle to stay above water. Two friends already in the water tried to rescue Mapp, but he disappeared.

State police called in a dive team and Mapp’s body was recovered Thursday evening in 24 feet of water.

Sixberry Lake, a 123-acre body of water, is 90 feet deep at its deepest point.
