WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - Authorities have publicly identified the woman found injured in the travel lane of Interstate 290 in Worcester last weekend, but have not charged the driver who allegedly struck her and left the scene.

The district attorney’s office said Thursday that 35-year-old Lorie Perreault was found by troopers in the “second right travel lane” at about 3:40 a.m. Sunday after several calls from motorists. She was pronounced dead at a city hospital of head injuries and fractures.

It was unclear what she was doing on the highway.

Police followed a trail of leaking automotive fluids to a nearby home and impounded a vehicle.

The Telegram & Gazette (https://bit.ly/1Rk7Cbc ) reports that the driver said he thought he struck an animal. No charges have been filed but the death remains under investigation.
