BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - A sewage spill has closed a stretch of beach in Biloxi.

The state Department of Environmental Quality said Thursday a two-block stretch of beach from Travia Avenue to Iberville Drive is closed after workers repaired a force main break outside a lift station.

Vincent Creel, the city’s public affairs manager, tells The Sun Herald (https://bit.ly/1F9oFth) approximately 25,000 gallons of untreated wastewater spilled at a lift station in West Biloxi.

Robbie Wilbur, MDEQ communications director, says the state agency will monitor the water and lift the closure when bacteria levels indicate conditions are safe for water contact.
