MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - The Mason City High School band will mark completion of the school’s new Mohawk Performance Hall by performing a newly written song, “Suite for Band.”

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1AKkoVV ) that the song will have its debut on Sunday at the band’s spring concert. The piece was written by St. Olaf College professor Timothy Mahr and commissioned by O. Jay and Pat Tomson of Mason City.

Mahr has been in Mason City this week to hone his composition with the teenage musicians.

Trumpet player Ellie Lehmann says Sunday’s performance of Mahr’s work will be “the first time he’s hearing it actually off the page, and this is the first time anyone’s performed it, so it’s just unique getting to collaborate with him and make excitement and energy happen.”
