FLINT, Mich. (AP) - Officials say more than 40 monuments at Flint’s Avondale Cemetery have been vandalized.

David White, president of the Genesee County Historical Society, tells The Flint Journal (https://bit.ly/1cek8sq ) it’s very unnerving to see the damage because it’s so disrespectful to the buried and so costly to repair.”

White says there is “just this malicious part of some people that do this.”

The vandalism was discovered Tuesday. Charles Sornig, business manager for Covenant Cemetery Services, which maintains the grounds, says the damage probably happened Monday night. Several of the damaged monuments are more than a century old.

Damage is estimated at thousands of dollars. Sornig says workers will repair what they can, but equipment and funds will be needed to lift and repair the stones.
