WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - A Waukegan judge has sentenced an Antioch Township man to 30 years in prison for the death of his former girlfriend.

The (Waukegan) News-Sun reports (https://trib.in/1ccGtXl ) Judge Victoria Rossetti sentenced 43-year-old Michael Axtell on Thursday in the 2012 death of 40-year-old Tammy Stone. Prosecutors say Axtell struck Stone three times on Oct. 24, 2012 after the couple returned home from a bar. The judge said the last blow was “dealt with such force that it took a life.”

Axtell will receive 944 days credit for the time he has spent in custody since his arrest.

Prosecutors requested a 40-year sentence. Defense attorney Katherine Hatch requested the minimum sentence of 20 years.

Axtell told the judge he “loved and missed” Stone but says he didn’t kill her.
