CHICAGO (AP) - A Southwest Airlines employee driving a baggage vehicle has been killed in a crash at Chicago’s Midway International Airport.

Police say the 52-year-old man was thrown from the vehicle when it crashed into another baggage vehicle Friday night.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office identified him as Michael Yates of suburban Carol Stream.

The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports that Yates was a retired DuPage County sheriff’s deputy who took a job with the airline to make it easier for his family to travel.

The newspaper reported that Yates served as a detective and SWAT team sniper during his police career and was part of a special team sent to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

No one else was injured in the accident. Authorities are investigating the cause.
