MAHOPAC, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a suburban New York woman wrested a gun way from her former boyfriend and shot him to death after he broke into her home.

The 50-year-old woman was shot in the leg during the confrontation early Saturday in Mahopac in Putnam County.

Carmel Police Chief Michael Cazzari tells The Journal News (https://lohud.us/1cjkIVH ) that the woman was defending herself and she will not be charged.

Police are not identifying the woman. She was treated for a leg wound and released.

The identity of the 47-year-old ex-boyfriend was not released pending notification of his family.

The woman called police shortly after 2 a.m. and said her former boyfriend was trying to break in.

When officers arrived they found the woman bleeding from a gunshot wound and the man dead.
