DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A day after a semi crashed into cars stopped on Interstate 80 in eastern Iowa for an accident, many of the 32 people injured have been released from hospitals and authorities said Saturday it’s surprising no one was killed.

A spokeswoman at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City said the eight patients treated there have been released and the local hospital in Marengo confirmed Saturday the 12 people from the accident they had treated also went home.

University Hospitals in Iowa City was treating the remaining 12 people. A hospital spokeswoman said she could not immediately release the number remaining.

Iowa State Patrol spokesman Nathan Ludwig said it was a miracle no one was killed in the fiery crash.

The patrol report said an earlier accident Friday halted traffic on the interstate near Williamsburg. At about 3 p.m., a semi driven by a Portland, Oregon, man who didn’t see that traffic had stopped crashed into the line of cars.

It caused chain reaction involving four other vehicles, including a tour bus carrying 26 employees from Ryan Companies, a Cedar Rapids commercial real estate developer.

Marc Gullickson, president of the Iowa office, told the Des Moines Register (https://dmreg.co/1PxKAdf ) that 22 of his staffers have been released from hospitals and that he doesn’t know the full extent of injuries of the remaining four.

“We don’t have all of the facts as of now so we are not in a position to comment in detail,” Gullickson said.

Two people were in critical care as of Friday night, University Hospitals Chief Nurse Kenneth Rempher told the newspaper.

The semi burst into flames upon impact and spread diesel fuel across the interstate, catching other vehicles including the bus on fire.
