DERRY, N.H. (AP) - Firefighters are reminding residents to properly install smoke detectors after a fire damaged a home and a car in Derry.

The cause of the fire on Friday is being investigated.

Officials say the home had one smoke detector but the device was not properly installed. It was lying on the top of a cabinet and did not alert the sleeping occupant, who was awakened by a neighbor pounding on the front door. The woman got out of the home safely.

The fire caused more than $120,000 in estimated damage to the home, its contents and the car.

The fire department recommends installing smoke alarms inside and outside each bedroom and sleeping area.
