HARVEY, La. (AP) - A Jefferson Parish deputy fatally shot a Harvey man Friday night after the man reportedly threatened officers with a gun.

The victim was identified Saturday as 48-year-old Dedrick Marshall.

Col. John N. Fortunato, the sheriff’s office spokesman, said in a news release that about 8:45 p.m. Friday investigators reported Marshall confronted his ex-girlfriend and a male companion, along with a second couple and a child, while inside a supermarket.

After an exchange of words, Fortunato said Marshall walked outside of the store. As the group walked out of the supermarket, Marshall, while driving his car, pulled up next to them and pointed a weapon in their direction, while continuing to make verbal threats.

Deputies were sent to Marshall’s home to talk with the man.

Fortunato said Marshall saw the officers and pointed a semi-automatic handgun at a deputy, who shot Marshall. Marshall was pronounced dead on the scene.

Fortunato said a loaded 40 caliber semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the scene.

An investigation is continuing.
