WASHINGTON (AP) - A former campaign staffer for D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has won the D.C. Council seat representing Ward 8 that was previously held by Marion Barry, based on an unofficial final tally.

The D.C. Board of Elections released the results Friday night showing LaRuby May received 26.76 percent of the vote. She defeated Trayon White by just 80 votes. White received 25.67 percent of the vote and says he will ask for a recount.

May’s win represents a victory for Bowser. Another former mayoral aide, Brandon Todd, won the Ward 4 seat. That gives Bowser two new allies on the 13-member council.

The elections board will hold a public audit of the votes Monday. The votes are to be certified May 14. Then May and Todd could be sworn into office.
