ROCKVILLE, Md. (AP) - A Montgomery County police officer is credited with saving the life of a baby girl.

Officer Dave Reed was patrolling Thursday night at the White Oak Shopping Center when someone reported a woman was crying in a nearby vehicle. Reed approached the woman who was hunched over in an SUV.

Reed says he asked if the woman needed help. She didn’t respond. Shortly after, Reed realized she was holding an infant that appeared unconscious.

Reed says he took the child and used two fingers to apply chest compressions. He reached around and tapped the baby’s back with the heel of his hand. Then the baby took a deep breath and started crying. Paramedics arrived and took the child to a hospital.

Officials expect the child to make a full recovery.
