MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Extra police officers will be used in the Myrtle Beach area over Memorial Day weekend to help out as visitors attend festivals including Atlantic Beach Bikefest.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports (https://bit.ly/1FbSHN2 ) that several local police departments are welcoming dozens of extra officers. The newspaper says the jail will have clerks working around the clock and will have more bond hearings.

Myrtle Beach police Chief Warren Gall says he hopes that an increase in officers will have a deterring effect on crime.

North Myrtle Beach spokesman Pat Dowling says the town will have extra officers as it has for the past decade, but that arrests have actually decreased over those years.

Last year on Memorial Day weekend, three people were killed and several others injured in shootings in Myrtle Beach.
