BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Nepalese students and faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham are partnering with the Alabama Nepalese Association to raise money for earthquake victims.

UAB officials say the groups are hosting a fundraising event May 15 on the fourth floor of the Lister Hill Library at 5:30 p.m.

The April 25 earthquake killed more than 7,000 people and injured many more. The U.N. estimates that as many as 8 million people have been affected by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

Nepal native and psychiatry student Samir Rana said in a statement that Alabamians are familiar with natural disasters and know how difficult the recovery process can be.
