BRAINTREE, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police say a man walking along train tracks was struck and killed by an Amtrak train.

It happened Saturday morning in the town of Braintree, which is about 30 miles south of Montpelier.

State Police say the man was alone and appeared to have been walking with his back to the train. They say the crew saw the man on the tracks but couldn’t stop the train in time. They say the man didn’t appear to respond as the train approached. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No one aboard the train was injured.

The victim’s identity wasn’t immediately released, but Capt. Donald Patch tells the Rutland Herald newspaper that he was from the area.

Patch says the death appears to be an accident. The train was stopped for several hours.
