ATLANTA (AP) - A Savannah educator has been named teacher of the year by the Georgia Department of Education.

Officials said in a statement that Ernest William Lee II of Windsor Forest High has been named with the honor. Lee is an International Baccalaureate history, U.S. government and civics teacher.

Officials say Lee was awarded at the Georgia Teacher of The Year banquet in Atlanta and will serve as a state public education advocate.

Department of Education officials say Lee worked as an attorney for more than 20 years before becoming a teacher. Lee also worked for the Georgia Department of Revenue and the Technical College System of Georgia.

Lee says he began working as a substitute in 2008 after asking himself what he had done to make a lasting and positive impact.
