SALEM, Ore. (AP) - The Salem police dog shot during a standoff with a suspect last month is back on the job.

KPTV and the Statesman Journal report that Baco (bah-ko) returned to work Thursday. Salem police Lt. Steve Birr says Baco had one suture left in his cheek but was otherwise fine.

Baco was shot in the side of the face by Mark Hawkins, a wanted man eventually killed by officers at end of a seven-hour standoff in a Walmart parking lot.

Birr says the bullet entered through the top of Baco’s left cheek and exited through the bottom, never penetrating the bone.

The officers who fired at Hawkins were cleared by a grand jury and can also return to work.
