GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Officials at East Carolina University say two men have been arrested in connection with racist graffiti and hate speech found in a stairwell at an East Carolina University residence hall.

A statement from the school said 18-year-olds Jack William Ramsey and Anthony David Madonio were arrested by the Union County Sheriff’s Department last week on warrants issued by ECU police. The two, both from Waxhaw, are charged with misdemeanor damage to personal property. Neither are current or former ECU students.

Campus police used security camera video to identify two suspects and worked with the FBI to determine the appropriate charges. ECU Police Chief Gerald Lewis said the FBI concluded that the graffiti and speech did not target a specific individual and found no basis to declare it a hate crime.
