RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) - The parents of a developmentally disabled man who was beaten to death at a California jail are suing for wrongful death.

The San Bernardino Sun (https://bit.ly/1LcML2O ) says the suit was filed Wednesday in federal court.

Nineteen-year-old Rashad Davis Jr. of Ontario was being held on suspicion of armed robbery when he was beaten by his cellmate in May at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

His parents are suing San Bernardino County and the jail captain, saying the cellmate was known to be violent and mentally unstable. The suit says jail staff failed to protect their son from repeated attacks by inmates or provide for his special needs.

Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman Jodi Miller declined comment.

The detention center’s also under FBI investigation over allegations that guards abused inmates.
