SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - A former inmate in a troubled Northern California jail says correctional guards attacked him a month before another inmate was beaten to death by three deputies.

KNTV reports (https://bit.ly/1PDVxgD) Thursday that Ruben Garcia says two correctional deputies beat him in July while he was in the Santa Clara County Main Jail on drug charges.

He plans to file a claim against Santa Clara County Thursday. Garcia told the station he did not initially report the incident because he was afraid.

Garcia also says he heard deputies beat inmate Michael Tyree to death in August. Three deputies are facing murder charges for that killing.

In a statement, the sheriff’s department confirms there is an investigation into the Garcia beating.

The Board of Supervisors has also formed a commission to probe Tyree’s death and other jail issues.
