RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A homicide in Rapid City this week has made 2015 a particularly violent year in the city.

Michael Crawford, 56, was gunned down late Tuesday, according to police. No arrests were immediately made and authorities did not provide further details of the incident. They asked anyone with information to contact them.

The slaying was the seventh reported homicide in Rapid City this year. There also was a fatal shooting of a suspect by a police officer - who was cleared of wrongdoing by a state investigation - and another homicide just a few miles outside city limits.

“This is certainly the most homicides we’ve had (in a year) in Rapid City in the past decade, and it is very concerning to me,” Police Chief Karl Jegeris said.

Crime statistics can vary depending on how crimes are defined and grouped together, so it’s difficult to determine exactly where the seven homicides rank in city history, the Rapid City Journal reported (https://bit.ly/1SlzM4h ). FBI statistics for Rapid City that include murder and non-negligent homicides show the highest number for a single year between 1985 and 2012 was four.

Suspects are being prosecuted in three of this year’s homicides. In two others, suspects pleaded guilty to manslaughter. No arrests have been made in the other two slayings.
