PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - Paterson’s imposing armory is coming down days after a stubborn fire continues to burn.

Demolition on the Market Street structure that was built in 1896 begins Thursday.

A fire that started Monday gutted the building that has not been in use since 1990.

Mayor Joey Torres tells The Record (https://bit.ly/1MpASsd ) newspaper the integrity of the building is unsafe.

Asbestos is complicating the armory’s demolition. Demolition industry workers said the asbestos contaminated sections will need to be kept wet and an air monitor will need to be set up.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
