MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - An Alabama man sentenced to life without parole on a murder charge has died.

Alabama Department of Corrections spokesman Bob Horton said in a statement that 55-year-old Joel Moyers of Limestone County died at a Montgomery hospital Thursday from complications linked to Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease, known as COPD.

Authorities have said Moyers shot at a truck 26-year-old Brandon Hydrick was riding in as he and his brother drove past Moyers’s trailer. Moyers said he was startled by the two after several burglaries in the neighborhood and fired a warning shot.

Moyers was in a wheelchair and used an oxygen mask when he was sentenced in May. Officials say he had been serving his sentence at the Kilby Correctional Facility in Montgomery. Horton says Moyers was hospitalized on Oct. 31.
