ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) - Helga and Charles Stephansen have nurtured an evergreen from a sapling they planted three decades ago in the side yard of their Arlington Heights home.
Now the entire village can enjoy it as the 2015 Christmas tree.
Village workers cut down the 40-foot tree and took it to North School Park. It is the 25th tree to stand over the village’s tree-lighting ceremony. This year’s will be Nov. 27.
Helga Stephansen told the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald (https://bit.ly/1Y6OArd ) that the beloved tree - planted in May 1982 - is nearing the end of its life. She offered the tree to the village last summer.
She said the village will return to lay sod where the tree was. But she might plant a replacement tree next spring.
