MARLIN, Texas (AP) - A man originally charged with assault in the shooting of an off-duty Central Texas police chief now faces a murder count following the chief’s death.

The Bell County District Attorney’s office says a complaint was issued Thursday against Derrick Wayne Gamble for murder.

Gamble was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon following the Nov. 1 shooting as Marlin police Chief Darrell Allen worked security at a Temple bar. Allen died Tuesday.

Gamble remained in jail Friday on $1.75 million bond on both charges.

The Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas on Friday criticized pursuing a murder charge instead of capital murder.

But the district attorney’s office says the final charging decision will be made after the investigation is concluded and the case is presented to a grand jury.
