COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Former U.S. senator and Republican ex-governor George Voinovich says he’s backing Ohio Gov. John Kasich (KAY’-sik) in the race for president.

In a Friday announcement, Voinovich says his endorsement is based on Kasich’s “demonstrated executive experience,” his record of leadership as Ohio’s governor and the strong campaign team he’s put together. He calls Kasich “Ohio’s favorite son.”

Voinovich says he finds Kasich’s platform “well taken” compared with those of his GOP rivals. He says the party needs someone with experience, noting Kasich’s 18 years in Congress and work balancing the federal budget in 1997.

In Washington, Voinovich was a moderate whose occasional swing vote was coveted on close issues. His long career also included stints as Cleveland mayor and lieutenant governor.

Kasich campaigns in Florida on Saturday.
