PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has accused a local fire district of firing a former female member based on her gender.

Kimberly Perreault says she was terminated from the Harmony Fire District in the Providence County town of Glocester in January after she raised concerns that male and female firefighters were being treated differently.

Perreault claims she and another woman were fired after complaining to the department. She had been with the volunteer fire district for 12 years.

The Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights is investigating the complaint.

The district’s attorney, Fred Mason, says he hasn’t seen the formal complaint yet and couldn’t comment other than to say the district is not involved in any discrimination.
