CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Gov. Pat McCrory has rejected a call from Mecklenburg County leaders who asked him to scuttle toll lanes on a stretch of Interstate 77 north of Charlotte.

A group of 20 lawmakers and local leaders appeared at a news conference in Lake Norman on Friday, where State Sen. Jeff Tarte read a letter sent to McCrory.

State Transportation Secretary Nick Tennyson sent a statement to the lawmakers saying it wouldn’t be appropriate for McCrory to cancel the contract based on a letter from Tarte and his colleagues without direction from the elected officials who requested and approved the project.

Tarte and the lawmakers told McCrory that their opposition to the project stems from the recent discovery of new information like asphalt too weak to handle the projected truck traffic.
