MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) - Windblown sand from the Lake Michigan shoreline has forced officials in Muskegon to close a street.

WOOD-TV reports that a portion of Beach Street has been shut down Friday in the western Michigan city.

A part of the street was closed Thursday as city officials feared water from high waves would flood the roadway.

Gale warnings were issued Thursday for the Great Lakes region as wave heights were expected to top 10 feet in some areas. Wind gusts of more than 40 mph were reported.

The raging weather was part of a storm system that crossed the Midwest and part of the state.
