FLORENCE, N.J. (AP) - A southern New Jersey county has finalized a deal to purchase two properties that nearly slid into the Delaware River.

The Burlington County Times reports (https://bit.ly/1HFuhNu ) Burlington County’s freeholders on Thursday finalized the purchase of Chris and Lynne O’Dell’s Florence home for more than $282,000. County spokesman Eric Arpert says the county recently settled with the second property owner.

The couple was forced to vacate the home after their backyard collapsed, raising fears the houses would slide off a hill and into the Delaware River. They’re in the process of moving to Pennsylvania.

Arpert says the properties likely will be demolished and the county would stabilize the embankment to preserve the road.

Officials didn’t find out what caused the sinkhole. It formed near a storm drain between the homes.
