SPRINGFIELD, Ga. (AP) - A sheriff says a robbery suspect is dead and a deputy wounded following a shootout in some woods in southeast Georgia.

Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie says four deputies were chasing Matthew Coleman, whom he described as a suspect in several burglaries and an armed robbery of a store, when a gunfight broke out Friday.

He says Coleman was killed and deputy James Wilkenson was shot in the shoulder. The sheriff says the deputy was taken to a hospital but his wounds did not appear to be serious.

The Savannah Morning News reports ( https://bit.ly/1McpdPs ) the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to investigate. An autopsy for Coleman is scheduled next week.

Authorities did not immediately disclose the race of the suspect or the wounded deputy.
