ISLE OF WIGHT, Va. (AP) - A Virginia travel agent has been charged with embezzlement.

The Isle of Wight County Sheriff’s Office says 33-year-old Augustine Acheampong turned himself in Friday to face nine counts of embezzlement. He was released on $5,000 bond. A grand jury indicted him on Monday.

The Daily Press (https://bit.ly/1Y9bAWL) reports that parents of Smithfield High School students who were planning a trip to Europe with Acheampong filed a complaint with the sheriff’s office, claiming he canceled the trip days before the departure and never returned their money. Acheampong owned Grade A Travel LLC of Lorton.

He faces a preliminary hearing on Nov. 18.

It wasn’t clear whether Acheampong had an attorney who could be contacted for comment. A phone number for him could not be found.
