WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) - A $1 million settlement has been reached in a wrongful death lawsuit against a former Williamsport police officer in a fatal crash last year.

The estate of James Robinson filed a petition Friday in federal court asking a judge to approve the settlement in the suit against the city and ex-officer Jonathan DePrenda.

DePrenda pleaded guilty in August to involuntary manslaughter and was sentenced to probation in the January 2014 crash.

Investigators said DePrenda was traveling 88 mph on a street with a 35 mph speed limit when his cruiser struck the 42-year-old victim’s car from behind, sending it into a utility pole.

As part of the settlement, the Williamsport council will apologize to the family and police will adopt a new policy on pursuits and have more officer training.
