LAUREL, Miss. (AP) - A dedication ceremony next week will be held to designate a section of Highway 590 in Jones County as the Carlos “Coach” McDaniel Memorial Highway.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation says the ceremony is scheduled Thursday, Nov. 19, at 6 p.m. at Jones County Junior College in Ellisville. McDaniel was a stand-out basketball player who went on to teach at JCJC, establishing the intramural and recreation program, which he maintained for 32 years until he passed away in 1999.

Lawmakers in 2013 approved designating a segment of the road, beginning at Interstate 59 east to Augusta Road, including the Highway 590/29 bypass.

MDOT will erect and maintain appropriate signs on the highway acknowledging McDaniel.
