RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks is evaluating different routes for a trail that would connect the Mount Rushmore National Memorial to the well-known George S. Mickelson Trail.

KEVN-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1SQ3Juc ) that the project is a decade in the making and could cost several million dollars.

Diana Saathoff is the executive director of the Mount Rushmore Society. She says the trail needs to stand out from hundreds of miles of other trails and says it’s a large project.

It could take more than 18 months for the department to finish an environmental impact statement examining different routes. Hikers, bikers and horseback riders would use the trail.
