DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A judge in now considering the fate of a Des Moines man accused of attacking an elderly couple in their home last year, killing the husband.

Des Moines television station KCCI reports (https://bit.ly/1Lfsmdv ) that closing arguments were made Friday in the trial of 19-year-old Ngor Makuey. Prosecutors say Makuey broke into the home of 97-year-old Rupert Anderson and beat him to death. Anderson’s wife, Harriett, was seriously injured, but survived the attack.

A defense psychiatrist testified that Makuey exhibited signs of schizophrenia, but a state psychiatrist testified he found no evidence that Makuey suffers from hallucinations, as Makuey has said.

A judge will determine the verdict, as Makuey opted for a bench trial over a jury trial.
