TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - Weather permitting, the Natchez Trace Parkway will conduct a prescribed burn inside the Tupelo city limits Monday.

Officials say the Nov. 16 Lakeside prescribed fire will help to restore native black prairie and reduce vegetation along the parkway boundary that could burn in a wildfire. The prescribed fire is located at milepost 260, near the intersection of the Trace and West Main Street.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1RUEbeH ) that a prescribed fire is a useful and cost effective tool used to manage the forests and grasslands that encompass the parkway. During the burn, smoke warning signs will be placed along the parkway as a precaution.

If visibility falls below 500 feet, the parkway may be temporarily closed until smoke has cleared.
