DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit police officer has been wounded during a shootout with a man following a high-speed chase on the city’s east side.

Police say the officer suffered a grazing wound to his leg about 10:20 a.m. Monday. The suspect was shot several times.

A second officer also was hurt.

Chief James Craig told reporters that the suspect sped off after the officers saw him trying to hide a handgun in a vehicle. The man stopped the car after a short chase and shot at the officers. The officers returned fire.

Both officers and the suspect were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

A woman who was in the car before the chase and shooting ran off. She was later arrested.
