GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - The University of North Dakota expects to announce a new nickname this week, after going the last three years without one.

Monday is the final day in the last round of voting for a new moniker to replace “Fighting Sioux,” which the NCAA deemed offensive. The new nickname will be either Fighting Hawks or Roughriders.

Fighting Hawks received the most votes in the first two rounds of voting but didn’t get more than 50 percent in either round. That prompted the third runoff vote.

The Utah-based private research company Qualtrics has conducted the voting, which is restricted to people with UND ties. Earlier voting eliminated North Stars, Sundogs and Nodaks as possible new nicknames.
