CASPER, Wyo. (AP) - Fire officials say a Casper motel fire that left one man dead may have been caused by a lit cigarette.

The Casper Star-Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1Yeeb1G ) that 56-year-old Michael Johnson died from injuries he sustained in the Friday blaze. Natrona County Coroner Connie Jacobson says Johnson was homeless but had been living in Casper for some time.

Police say firefighters arrived to the Topper Motel to find smoke billowing from the building.

The room where Johnson was staying was burned and others may have been damaged by smoke.

Investigator Justin Smith says smoking appears to be the most likely cause of the fire, but foul play has not been ruled out.

Smith says the fire alarm in Johnson’s room was not working.

The fire continues to be investigated.
