SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) - A committee has proposed closing three swimming pools and replacing them with a regional aquatic center.

The committee approved a plan Monday night to close the Cook and Leeds pools after the 2016 swimming season and replace them with splash pads. Lewis pool would be closed and be replaced by the proposed aquatic center, which could cost up to $9 million.

Declining use of several city swimming pools prompted officials to discuss how they should address the facilities operating at a loss.

The committee will seek community reaction during a meeting in December and form a recommendation for the City Council’s final vote.
