CINCINNATI (AP) - Former major league manager and player Dusty Baker will be part of a panel discussion about sports mascots highlighting a special exhibition slated to open at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in southwest Ohio.
Two representatives of Native American tribes and a clinical psychologist from Xavier University in Cincinnati also will take part on Saturday’s panel. Xavier is partnering with the Freedom Center.
Officials say the program will focus on representations of American Indians in athletics and the perpetuation of stereotypes.
The exhibition “Mascots” also opens on Saturday at the center in downtown Cincinnati.
Nearby Miami University changed its athletic teams’ name from Redskins to RedHawks two decades ago. However, Washington’s National Football League franchise has resisted calls to rename the Redskins team.
