SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - After Democrat James Stewart Sr. was elected district attorney in Caddo Parish, some of his supporters celebrated by donning T-shirts that read, “We made history!”

The Times (https://bit.ly/1Sd5qBh ) reports that Stewart is the parish’s first African-American district attorney.

Complete but unofficial returns gave him 55 percent of the vote against Republican Dhu (“doo”) Thompson, who has been a Caddo Parish prosecutor for a decade.

The election went on the ballot after the death of District Attorney Charles Rex Scott.

Stewart entered the race in August after retiring from the state 2nd Circuit Court of Appeal.
