JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - Demolition is set to begin on the fire-damaged Gastineau Apartments.

The Juneau Empire reports (https://bit.ly/1T8jYmr) the city’s tentative project schedule set destruction of the central Gunakadeit Park for Monday.

Sitka-based contractor CBC Construction and its subcontractors plan to have the project completed before March 2016. The city has budgeted $1.8 million for the demolition.

The buildings have been empty since a fire broke out Nov. 5, 2012, with subsequent damage from water and squatters leaving the apartments uninhabitable.

After a second fire in March of this year, city officials allocated demolition funding.

The City and Borough of Juneau Assembly nixed a proposal earlier this month to postpone the tear-down so that restoration plans could be made.
