TULSA, Okla. (AP) - A former Tulsa County sheriff’s deputy was sentenced Monday to eight years in prison after being convicted of sexual battery and indecent exposure charges.

Gerald Nuckolls was sentenced by District Judge Bill LaFortune, who followed the recommendations by the jury that convicted Nuckolls last month on both counts. The jury also acquitted Nuckolls on one count of each of those charges.

Nuckolls’ attorney, Terry Funk, had asked the court for probation or ordering that the prison time for both counts run concurrently. In a filing Monday, Funk wrote that Nuckolls had shown remorse for his actions and would continue counseling. Funk also said in the filing that because Nuckolls had made “numerous arrests” for the sheriff’s office, he could face “potential dangerous situations” in prison.

“I destroyed a relationship (with my ex-fiancee),” Nuckolls told the court before sentencing. “I embarrassed myself, my family, my friends … I embarrassed (the Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office.)”

Nuckolls maintained throughout his trial that his behavior was consensual and, even though he believed it wasn’t a crime, conceded that he violated sheriff’s office policies and had inappropriate interactions with women “because of his problems with sexual issues.”

He resigned shortly after his arrest last year.

Nuckolls’ arrest and booking report indicated that Nuckolls told detectives he “has a problem for pretty women” and that “sexual-type activity has occurred” during encounters with about six women during traffic stops or on other calls.

Nuckolls also allegedly told investigators that he had exposed himself to several of the women and exchanged nude pictures with them.

Around the time of Nuckolls’ arrest last year, two other Oklahoma law enforcement officers had been taken into custody for similar allegations of sexual assault.
