TOWN OF CALEDONIA, Wis. (AP) - Authorities say a hunter has been fatally shot in Columbia County.

Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources spokesman Jon King says a man was lifting a loaded rifle to a hunter in a tree stand when the gun fired and struck the 39-year-old man on the ground. The shooting happened in the Town of Caledonia Sunday morning.

WKOW-TV (https://bit.ly/1LvHseR ) reports the man was taken to a Portage hospital, then airlifted to UW Hospital in Madison where he was pronounced dead.

The DNR and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department are investigating.
