AMES, Iowa (AP) - Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard says coach Paul Rhoads was dismissed Sunday because the program wasn’t going in the right direction.

Pollard spoke to reporters Monday, two days after a devastating loss at Kansas State that left Iowa State at 3-8. Pollard says he wished he didn’t have to fire Rhoads, who signed a 10-year extension in 2012, but that the results simply weren’t there.

Pollard says the search for a new coach is already underway, though he declined to discuss his timetable. But Rhoads will coach the Cyclones in their season finale at West Virginia this weekend.
