RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) - A jury has convicted a Fremont County man of trying to kill his wife with a hatchet.

The Riverton Ranger reports (https://goo.gl/HuQYot ) jurors found Terry L. Schmuck guilty on Friday of attempted second-degree murder for attacking his wife May 28.

Prosecutors say Schmuck went to his wife’s home, cut her telephone wires and then struck her in the head with a hatchet. They argued that Schmuck had been angry with his wife, who suffered a skull fracture in the attack, because she had served him with divorce papers.

Schmuck’s attorney acknowledged his client hit his wife with the hatchet. But he claimed Schmuck only struck her once by thrusting the weapon at her, rather than swinging it by the handle.

Schmuck faces 20 years to life in prison.
