DURANGO, Colo. (AP) - A Montrose forensic pathologist has been appointed to perform autopsies for several counties in Southwest Colorado.

The Durango Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1LvzNNL ) that Dr. Michael Benziger began working with La Plata, Archuleta, Montezuma and San Juan counties this month.

The switch to Benziger means counties will spend more time transporting bodies to and from Montrose. Benziger’s predecessor, Dr. Rob Kurtzman, would make weekly trips from Grand Junction.

La Plata County and neighboring counties said they are budgeting between $1,100 and $1,500 per case for Benziger’s services, depending on the length of the trip.

Officials say the road trip to Montrose is expensive, but having Kurtzman travel also incurred the cost of a hotel. They say the cost is about the same with the new arrangement.
